Choose, inspect and display scale models
How to pick a kit worth building, what to check in an old box before buying, and how to display a finished model without harming the finish.

A kit is worth building when the subject interests you, the scale suits the space you have, and the moulds are recent enough that the parts fit without hours of filler. Judge the box before you pay, not after: check the sprues, the decals and the instructions, because those three decide most of the build. Once the model is finished, protection matters more than display: a closed case with the right depth and controlled light will keep a finish intact for years.

Start with the subject, then the scale
Beginners lose more models to ambition than to skill. Pick a subject you actually want on the shelf, then choose the smallest sensible scale for it. 1/72 is the common working scale for aircraft: small enough to store, large enough that detail is visible without magnification. Ships behave differently. A 1/350 warship is a long, thin object that needs a shelf of its own, while a wooden ship kit with a full hull and rigging asks for patience with thread and knots rather than with paint.
Era matters too. Aircraft from 1903 to 1918 are mostly wire, struts and open cockpits, which means fragile assemblies and rigging that punishes clumsy handling. Later subjects hide more of their structure inside a fuselage. Neither is harder in principle, but they fail in different ways, and knowing which failure you can live with is half the decision.
If you collect rather than build, the question changes. A collector is buying a finished object and its history, and the practical guidance on scale models and replicas covers that side of the hobby alongside kit selection, box inspection and display. Builders and collectors overlap more than either group admits, and the same rules about light, dust and handling apply to both.

How do I choose a scale model kit worth building?
Look at three things before anything else: the mould date, the parts count and the decal sheet. A kit first issued decades ago and never retooled will show its age in raised panel lines, thick gates and vague location pins. That does not make it unbuildable, but it makes it a project rather than an evening.
Parts count is a rough proxy for time. Under a hundred parts is a weekend for most people. Several hundred means weeks, plus a plan for where the model lives while it is half finished. Decals age badly: yellowed film, silvering and brittle carrier film are common in old sheets, and replacement decals often cost more than the kit did.
Scale should follow storage, not aspiration. Measure the shelf before you buy. A 1/72 bomber can be longer than a 1/48 fighter, and helicopters add rotor diameter on top of fuselage length. Seaplanes and floatplanes add width again. If the finished model will not fit anywhere visible, it will spend its life in a box, which defeats the purpose.
Finally, check whether the kit matches the version you want. Box art is marketing; the sprues are the truth. A kit labelled as one mark often contains parts for several, and the instructions may not make clear which combination is correct.

What should I inspect in an old kit before buying it?
Open the box if the seller allows it. If they do not, treat the purchase as a gamble and price it accordingly.
Check the sprues first. Look for short shots where plastic did not fill the mould, sink marks on visible surfaces, and flash along part edges. Warping is harder to spot but shows up as curved wings or a twisted hull when the parts are laid flat on a table. Compare two identical parts from the same sprue: if they do not match, the mould is tired.
Check the clear parts against a light. Crazing, scratches and yellowing cannot be polished out reliably, and replacement canopies are not always available for older kits.
Check the decals. Hold the sheet up to a window. Yellowed film may improve after sunlight exposure, but cracked or curled decals rarely recover. Check that the sheet is complete: missing stencil decals are annoying, missing national markings are fatal to a historical build.
Check the instructions and any photo-etched or resin parts. A missing instruction sheet is recoverable online for popular kits, less so for obscure ones. Resin parts should be inspected for bubbles and short pours, and photo-etched frets for creases.
Check the box itself for water damage. Damp cardboard means damp decals and possibly rusted metal parts. A seller who photographs the sprues rather than the box lid is usually a seller worth trusting, because they know what buyers need to see.

How do I display and protect a finished model?
Dust is the slow enemy. It settles into panel lines, mats on flat finishes and is difficult to remove without touching the surface. A closed case solves most of it. Acrylic is lighter and clearer than glass, scratches more easily, and can be cleaned with a soft cloth and mild soapy water. Glass is heavier, resists scratching, and costs more for the same footprint.
Depth matters more than height. A case needs clearance above the tallest point, usually an antenna, rotor mast or rigging, plus enough room to lift the model in and out without catching anything. Measure the finished model, not the box. Add at least a few centimetres on every side.
Light should come from outside the case, not inside it. Ultraviolet light fades paint and yellows decals over years, so keep displays away from direct sun and use LED sources that emit little UV. A model lit from above by a warm lamp will also show every speck of dust that lands on the case itself, which is a maintenance issue rather than a conservation one.
Handling is the other risk. Cotton gloves for metal and painted surfaces, bare clean hands for nothing. Lift models by the base or the strongest structural point, never by a wingtip, rotor blade or mast. If a model must be moved often, mount it on a base that can be carried as a unit.

Keeping the finish intact over years
A finished model is a compromise between paint, decals and clear coat, and every one of those layers reacts to its environment. Keep the display out of damp rooms, because moisture affects decals and can lift varnish. Keep it out of hot attics, because heat softens resin and warps thin plastic. Keep it out of kitchens, because airborne grease settles on surfaces and is very hard to remove without abrasion.
Record what you did. A short note on paint brands, clear coat and decal solutions saves guesswork if a repair is ever needed. Photograph the model from several angles when it is finished, which is useful for insurance, for resale and for your own reference if a part later goes missing.
For older models already in a collection, inspect periodically rather than constantly. Once a year, check for dust ingress, decal lifting and any sign of sagging in rigging or undercarriage. Fix small problems early. A loose strut is a five minute repair; a collapsed wing is not.

Where the hobby divides and where it does not
Builders and collectors argue about whether a model should be handled, upgraded or left as issued. The practical answer is that both groups want the same thing: an object that survives. Whether it was assembled at a bench last winter or bought already finished, the risks are identical, and so are the remedies. Choose carefully, inspect honestly, and give the finished piece a case, a stable position and a reason to be looked at.

Carry the note into the next day
The value of a production note is its second use. Keep the decision, the reason for it and the signal that would make you change it. That short record gives the next person a way to repeat the useful part without repeating every mistake.
